Destination Insight Salvador da Bahia is the biggest city in northeast Brazil. The city sits at the mouth of the largest and perhaps most beautiful bay on the Brazilian coast, All Saints' Bay, covering more than 1,000 square kilometers encompassing 56 islands. The bay is fed by many fresh water sources, most importantly the Paraguaçu and the Subaé rivers. Greator Salvador consists of ten different municipalities, including Salvador, which are clustered together and known collectively as the Recôncavo. Salvador holds a special place in world gay history as the first city in Latin America to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. |
